Event Details

Mindfulness Based Living Course (MBLC) is a 10-week group course which focuses on incorporating mindfulness and meditation into everyday life.       


Course Overview

The Mindfulness Based Living Course was designed by the Mindfulness Association to give a thorough introduction to mindfulness and the development of mindfulness practice in daily life, including practices encouraging kindness and compassion. It is recognised by the UK Mindfulness Teachers Network as an equivalent to the 8-week MBSR course.

  • It provides an introduction to mindfulness practice through guided exercises, meditations, group reflection and discussion, all led by an experienced group facilitator offering an open and warm approach.
  • It is an eight week course consisting of eight classes, typically two hours long, preceded by an introductory class before the eight week course begins and concluded by a follow up class after the eight week course ends.
  • The course gradually progresses from short or relaxing meditations suitable for beginners to more advanced mindfulness exercises which include approaching difficult thoughts/emotions. Alongside this, there are practices to nurture a sense of kindness towards ourselves and others.

The weekly themes are:

  • Introductory Session - What is Mindfulness and Why Practice It?
  • Class 2 - Start Where We Are
  • Class 3 - The Body as a Place to Stay Present
  • Class 4 - Introducing Mindfulness Support
  • Class 5 - Working with Distraction
  • Class 6 - Exploring the Undercurrent
  • Class 7 - Attitude
  • Class 8 - Self-acceptance
  • Class 9 - A Mindfulness Based Life
  • Follow Up (after a month) - The Rest of Your Life

Who Can Attend 

This course is suitable for beginners, as well as those wishing to refresh and consolidate their mindfulness practice after having done a different course. Reasons for attending could include wanting to take a proactive stance towards improving wellbeing, finding more balance in life, approaching stress and difficulties in a different way, or looking for a complementary approach to managing health related issues. Please note however that it is a personal development course and not a therapy group.


Commitment Required

Attendance of 10 x 2 hour sessions. Participation on a Practice Day is also recommended at some point after Class 6.This course teaches a valuable life skill, the development of which may be challenging, and requires a personal commitment to attending all ten classes, as well as maintaining a regular meditation practice at home. As each class builds on the preceding week, it is important that anyone who misses a class attends a "catch up session". We are happy to accommodate this in the case of illness etc., but regret that if more than two classes are missed you may not be able to finish the course. We therefore recommend carefully checking the course schedule below before reserving a place. 


Course Schedule 

This course will be taught over ten weekly classes from 18th January to 22nd March, with the follow up session taking place on the 19th April. PLEASE NOTE there is also a break in the course on 15th February for half term. Each class will be 2 hours long and will take place on Thursdays from 10:00am - 12:00pm.


Course Facilitator

The facilitator for this course is Alison Gear.

Alison started practicing mindfulness in 2010. Finding it beneficial both personally and professionally, she trained to teach the Mindfulness Based Living Course with the Mindfulness Association. Alison has a background of 25 years in the counselling profession and personal development work with both groups and individuals.


Frequently Asked Questions... 


What is the difference between the MBLC and MBSR courses?  

The courses are approximately equivalent in terms of time investment, MBLC being taught over 10 sessions running at 2 hours each, and MBSR over 8 sessions but with sessions often running to 2.5 hours. The course content differs slightly, reflecting where the course was developed and who by. MBLC was developed by Rob Nairn and colleagues in conjunction with the MSc Mindfulness Studies at Aberdeen University. Kindness practices are integral to the course from early on, and there is a slight difference in the way that the initial mindfulness meditation is taught, however both courses are designed to build class on class to assist you to develop your own mindfulness practice.

What if I miss a class?  

We are happy to provide catch up sessions for delegates who miss a class.  Catch ups are usually provided on a one-to-one basis with the course instructor and take 30 minutes to complete.  There is a nominal charge of £15 for this service. 

Is there disabled access to the venue?

There is disabled access to the venue. The rooms used and disabled toilets are all on ground floor level.    

What further information will I receive?  

All our delegates receive "Joining Advice" one week before their course commences.  This email will include information on the class schedule, venue and facilities, and a link to our "pre-course questionnaire" which we would be grateful if you could complete before the course commences.    

What is your cancellation policy?

If you decide to cancel your place on this course, we will refund...

  • Your full course fee, minus a £20 administration charge, if we receive notice from you at least 7 days before the 1st class
  • 75% of your course fee if notice is given before the 2nd class
  • 50% of your course fee if notice is given before the 3rd class
  • No refunds will be issued after the 3rd class

In the case that the course is cancelled by York MBSR, all course fees will be refunded in full.

I am considering training to teach mindfulness, will an MBLC course enable me to do this?

For those looking to teach mindfulness we would recommend having a look at the UK Network for Mindfulness Based Teacher Training Organisations which gives guidance on good practice and teacher training organisations within the UK.  An MBLC or MBSR course is generally considered a good starting point and often a pre-requisite to attending teaching training. If you are looking to follow a particular training route it is worth checking any stipulated pre-requisites.
