Yorkshire Coastal Foraging Experience
Overview
Would you love to learn more about the wonderful edible seaweeds, shellfish and creatures which inhabit the micro universes of our coastal rock pools, as well as the many and varied edible plant species which thrive in a coastal habitat?
If you’ve ever been to the beach and wondered why all those folk are hanging around the rock pools at low tide, inspecting seaweed and having earnest conversations, they will likely be foragers!
Coastal foraging is a joy and a revelation, a whole host of tastes, textures and sensations for the palate.. a world of magical beauty and wonder when you get up close!
Our day will start at Bogle Hole, we will make our way down to the shore, exploring the hedgerow and wild spring plants as we go. We will be taking advantage of a super low tide giving access to some wonderful coastal edibles.
We will look at the fascinating seaweeds and shellfish which occupy the varied strata of the inter-tidal zone, have some tasters (no pressure) and discuss ways to harvest and prepare these delicious superfoods.
It isn’t just what’s down at the low tide line though, there are a whole host of plants and trees which thrive along the coastal edges, where the beach meets the dunes and along the coastal paths and surrounding hedgerows. Some might be familiar, others might be a revelation!
We will discuss the benefits of many wild plants and how they can be used for natural plant remedies as well as transforming them into tasty pickle, ferments & wild food inspired dishes.
This event also includes a fabulous wild food picnic, a celebration of wild food, showcasing many of the plants and seaweeds we have discovered and discussed.
Our aim is to inspire you to use the ingredients we have discovered together to create great food of your own when you get home! We will also be sharing some recipes!
You will be in good hands, with a holistic Chinese Medicine therapist and chef running the day! Both with many years of foraging experience and members of the Association of Foragers.
Our aim is to inspire you to use the ingredients we have discovered together to create great food of your own when you get home! We will also be sharing some recipes!
No two days are the same, it is difficult to predict a strict running order, so we will allow nature, plants & seaweed dictate the way the day unfolds! Of course, due to the unpredictability of nature and the seasons, we also can’t predict what we will find on the day. Nature gives no guarantees!
Information for the day..
*Bring PLENTY of clothing options (layers) and shoe options…and have something in your car to change into in case you get wet! A towel or dryrobe is a good idea too, if you would like to swim at the end of the day there is that option too.
*The weather can change quickly on this coast so you need to be ready for all eventualities.
*Waterproof jacket
*Wellies or walking boots… surf shoes (for the rock pools).
We will be getting out as far as possible to the low tide line in the hope of finding some of the less accessible seaweeds so it’s important to protect feet …We wear wellies/waterproofs, but if you’d prefer to wear swimming gear that’s great.
*Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated and possibly a hot drink
*Please bring a fork, spoon, bowl and a cup each for tasting samples
*A note book and pen is always useful, and don’t forget to charge your phone for all those pics!
*Hand gel/ wipes
*Hat/sunglasses/suncream/ insect repellent may be needed. You just never know with the UK Climate
*Rucksack or basket for collecting.
*Scissors are a must for foraging seaweed
We try to discourage the use of plastic bags… most supermarkets now sell reusable net bags in the veg section …we recommended these as they are more environmentally friendly, very cheap and fantastic for collecting wild plants.
