Description

Fancy a days photography tuition in 'proper' Limestone country? The Yorkshire Dales lay claim to the most extensive areas of upland Limestone scenery to be found anywhere in the U.K, and yet, unbelievably, they're still not heavily photographed. That's great news for us, as the likelihood is that we'll have these areas entirely to ourselves! We'll visit at least three to four of a possible eight or nine remarkable locations, remaining mobile throughout and reacting to the light and conditions on the day rather than sticking to any kind of pre-formulated plan. The fantastic thing about the Yorkshire Dales is its sheer diversity, and with so many options within a reasonably short drive of each other, it's easy to have a positive backup plan in the event of a change in the weather.

A ten hour day and a small group size of four photographers means that whatever your ability level, you will receive plenty of helpful advice and tuition throughout the course of the day, all of which is tailored to individual requirement by way of a short and uncomplicated pre-workshop questionnaire.

Comments from prior workshop clients

I imagined that on my first workshop it would be mostly showing me how to work the camera and use manual setting, demystifying focus, iso and exposure. This was the case but alongside the technical aspects of using a camera I was also getting a lot of information about how to look at landscapes. I had no idea how to see an image.

David showed me how to make the best of an area and I came away with an image I now have on my wall.

I have been on several trips with David now, from the Yorkshire coast to the Wolds from a hike up the hills to exploring a waterfall, David is patient and knowledgeable, he makes you see in a different way. Generous with his knowledge, and locations, David has helped me see there is much more to learn and he has a passion for the landscape that is infectious. I have learned more in a day with David than I have reading loads of books on landscape photography. There is no substitute for getting out there and wrestling with the conditions presented to you by nature and no better companion than David to show you the way.

Hi David. A big thank you for the one-to-one course held on the East Coast on Wednesday. You started with really basic help on manual shooting and helped me understand what my micro four-thirds is capable of. Much more than I thought, and I can't wait to keep practicing non-automatic images!! We had amazing weather, but your knowledge of the tides and the timing of the sunset set me up for some beautiful sunset shots that I didn't think I would be able to do. You have really fired my imagination with your references to patterns and lines, and I can't wait to get the tripod out again in Scotland next week. Thank you very much.

Hi David Thank you for the ‘eye opening’ workshop. Given that I was (and am) a complete novice, I am just very thankful you didn’t try to complicate it for me. I was worried I wouldn’t understand the technicalities of a camera but I am feeling a lot more confident about experimenting with the various settings now. Thank you also for sharing the thought process behind shooting landscapes, alongside other useful tips and techniques

First off, David is an extremely talented photographer who produces some wonderful images – just check out his gallery if you haven’t already done so. He is also a top guy, very friendly with a great sense of humour, and someone who really cares about making sure that the clients on his workshops get the very best experience possible. He tailors the tuition to suit everyone’s ability and is extremely generous in sharing his experience and know-how (this is not the case with all photography tutors in my experience).

We had a great day around Robin Hoods Bay. David knows his locations intimately and made sure we were in the right spot at the right time. The practical advice was supplemented with examples drawn from his own work to explain principles of composition etc and we even managed to squeeze in a really useful Photoshop tutorial over lunch in a cafe overlooking the bay – wonderful! All in all a totally absorbing day which was great fun and has moved my photography skills on in leaps and bounds!
