Description

This symposium will critically reflect on the first Yorkshire Sculpture International with a day of talks by artists, curators, fabricators and educators.

Bringing guest speakers together to explore the work that goes on behind the scenes to develop large scale and public sculpture for international exhibitions.

Discussions will include

  • The traditional and new technologies used in sculpture today

  • The role of collaboration with fabricators and specialists

  • The challenges of developing sculpture for the public realm and the current context of accessing sculpture making facilities and education in sculpture

Throughout the day we will consider the future aspirations for Yorkshire Sculpture International (the second of which is planned in 2023) and the production of sculpture in Yorkshire.

The morning session will focus on sculpture production.
Guest speakers are:

  • Rungwe Kingdon, Co-Founder and Director of Pangolin Editions

  • Rana Begum, Artist

  • Samuel Leuenberger, Director and Curator of SALTS, Birsfelden and Curator of Art Basel's Parcours programme

  • Simeon Barclay, Artist

The afternoon session will be dedicated to discussing access to sculpture facilities and sculpture education.
Guest speakers are:

  • Lucy Tomlins, Director of Pangaea Sculptors’ Centre

  • Henry Ward, Creative Director of Freelands Foundation

  • Prof. Dr. Ann-Sophie Lehmann, Professor of Art History & Material Culture and Head of Department History of Art, Architecture and Landscape at the University of Groningen

Special offer tickets are available until 9 August at £35 each, after that general tickets are £40
Concessionary tickets are available for unwaged and students at £15

Tour of Yorkshire Sculpture International
Thursday 19 September, 10.00 - 17.30, starting at Leeds Art Gallery

We are offering a coach tour of Yorkshire Sculpture International venues and outdoor sculpture in Leeds and Wakefield, exclusively for delegates of the symposium.

The tour includes: Leeds Art Gallery, The Henry Moore Institute, public sculptures by Damien Hirst and Huma Bhabha in Leeds and Wakefield, The Hepworth Wakefield and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

A full itinerary will be sent out to delegates booked onto the tour nearer the day.

Tickets for the coach tour can be booked at the same time as the symposium. £12 each

As part of our partnership with Leeds Beckett University, we will be launching two artist books at 17.30 at the Henry Moore Institute, after the tour, which delegates are very welcome to attend.
