About this event

  • Event lasts 5 hours 30 minutes

Yorkshire Sculpture Park is situated in the designed landscape of Bretton Hall, pleasure grounds of the late 18th - and early 19th-century, together with parkland of the 18th century with earlier origins. Richard Woods was consulted about improvements in 1764, but it is not known what he proposed and whether it was carried out. Robert Marnock (1800-99) was head gardener for a period prior to his departure in 1834.

This visit, hosted by Mark Chesman, Head of Estate and Projects will consider the historic landscape and the challenges of managing significant visitor numbers and the installation of temporary sculptures in the registered landscape.

Following arrival coffee in the Roger Evans Auditorium in the Visitor Centre, there will be an illustrated talk by Mark and after self-funded lunch from the café or a picnic, a choice of two walks (one shorter and one longer) in the landscape with narrative and stops linked to the morning lecture.

Tickets cost: £22.00 members £25.00 non-members

Organiser: Maddy Hughes

Organized by

Every year we organise a varied programme of events aimed at improving our knowledge and enjoyment of designed landscapes, parks and gardens. Our visits are usually led by owners, head gardeners and researchers. We also arrange study days and lectures, both in person and by zoom.

Members and non-members are welcome. For popular events, and for those limited by numbers, priority will be given to members. See website, or contact events@yorkshiregardenstrust.org.uk, for more information.

We aim to maintain ticket costs at a reasonable level to ensure that our events are accessible. We include some element of fund raising in some of our visit prices to support our Small Grants, Bursary and Schools programmes.
