About this event

Everyone has been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. For many, it is their mental health that has been affected. I had read people's stories of how lockdown had affected people but wanted to find out more. A study by the charity Mind reported that, of almost 17,000 people surveyed, more than half of adults and over two thirds of young people said their mental health got worse during lockdown. One reason the report suggests is that, during lockdown, many people did not access mental health services because they felt that they did not deserve or would not receive support. One individual said “I don’t want to cause problems as the NHS is already struggling. From prior experience, not much help is available without waiting for months anyway.” Over half of young people and adults surveyed said they had over or under-eaten to cope, while nearly a third turned to alcohol or illegal drugs. More than 1 in 4 young people reported self-harming, which makes them twice as likely as adults to try and cope in this way.

The report makes clear that those who seek advice and support for their mental health are given positive coping strategies which can support their mental health. At a time when accessing all services is difficult, the charity Mind is there to offer this support and guidance. I chose Oxfordshire Mind because, by raising awareness for this mental health charity, my hope is that even more people might seek the help that they need.
