Workshops
You will be able to take part in one of the three workshops:
1. Insights and opportunities from Local Authority Assurance led by Amanda Stride, Deputy Director for Local Authority Assessment Delivery at the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Jeremy Gleaden, Senior HMI for Social Care at the Ofsted
It’s been 18 months since both Ofsted and the CQC included young carers in their assurance frameworks for social care for the first time. But what have these assessments revealed? And how do young carers, young adult carers, and the services that support them fit into the inspection processes? This session will highlight key trends, strengths, and opportunities emerging from inspections of children’s and adult social care. You’ll also have the chance to ask questions about what Ofsted and the CQC are looking for and how the process works.
2. Models of support for young carers: what are we trying to achieve? chaired by Professor Saul Becker, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Health and Education at the Manchester Metropolitan University and facilitated by members of the Young Carers Alliance Systems Change Working Group
Across the UK, young carers receive support through a variety of channels - young carer services, schools, and local authorities. But what should this support aim to achieve? And how well are we doing? This interactive session invites delegates to reflect on their own organisation’s practice using the “3 Pillars of Support” model. Together, we’ll explore barriers and opportunities to improving support for young carers and young adult carers.
3. Supporting young carers currently under the radar led by Claire Briston, Impact and Policy Director at Newcastle Carers and Helen Bolt, Family Project Coordinator at Sheffield Young Carers
While the number of young carers continues to rise, many remain unknown to services or local authorities. This session will focus on two particularly under-identified groups: young carers supporting someone with a drug or alcohol addiction; and young carers from refugee and asylum-seeking communities. We’ll explore not only how to identify these young carers, but also how to provide tailored support that meets their specific needs.
Networking and interactive discussions
Throughout the day, there will be plenty of opportunities to connect and collaborate, including:
Firepit conversation - Involving young carers and ensuring their voices are heard is essential - but how do we do this safely and meaningfully? Join Gloucestershire Young Carers and Sheffield Young Carers for an informal conversation about their approaches and their brand-new co-production toolkit, developed with young carers and freely available for use.
Information Zone - Visit the Information Zone to meet Carers Trust and Young Carers Alliance members. Discover resources and support available to help you in your work with young carers and young adult carers.
