Our event will be held at the Leeds Caribbean and African Centre formerlly known as Leeds West Indian Centre. Get ready to immerse yourself in a world of culture, creativity, and dance. This is your chance to make new friends, unleash your creativity, and learn from talented instructors. Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to be a part of something special.

Join Us for Five Days of Fun, Creativity, and Learning!

Calling all young creatives and carnival lovers! Leeds West Indian Carnival (LWIC) invites you to an unforgettable five-day summer school bursting with energy, creativity, and culture. Whether you love dance, music, costume-making, or just want to be part of something special — this is the place to be!


What’s in Store?

🎨 Costume-Making Workshops
Get hands-on creating stunning carnival costumes with guidance from Unity Carnival Arts. Children will help bring to life the winning designs from the LWIC “Design a Costume” competition! These costumes — one Prince, one Princess — will be worn at the Carnival Royalty Show and could even feature in the Leeds Carnival Parade on Monday 25th August!

💡 The winning costumes will be made by the children with expert support from:
Hughbon (High Esteem) – Costume Framework
Unity Carnival Arts – Creative Workshops
AnonyMas – Sparkling Final Touches

💃 Dance Classes
Move to the rhythm with Pareesha Valentina, learning both traditional and contemporary carnival dance styles.

🎶 Music Sessions
Discover the magic of carnival music.

📚 Cultural Education
Explore the rich history and traditions of Carnival and Caribbean culture in fun, interactive sessions.


🎉 Opportunity to Perform!

Children will have the chance to perform and showcase what they’ve learned at a family showing at the end of the 5 days with an exciting opportunity to perform at the Carnival Royalty Show on Saturday 23rd August 2025 — whether it be a dance or music performance. Full details will be shared during the summer school.

This is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills, and shine on one of the biggest stages in Leeds. Whether you're a budding artist, dancer, or just love carnival culture — there's something for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring a packed lunch?

Yes, please bring a packed lunch, Light snacks and refreshments will be provided daily. We ask that NO NUTS are brought on site, so we can keep this a nut free venue.

What age group is the summer school aimed at?

The Summer school is aimed at children aged 5-15 years. School age children only!! Anybody younger will not be able to stay at the summer school.

What should I wear?

Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for dance and creative activities. Glue and other adhesives will be used in the costume design activities; please wear clothes you wouldn’t mind getting glue on but most of all be comfortable.

Are staff DBS checked?

Yes, all staff involved in the Young Masqueraders Summer School are fully DBS checked. In addition, young volunteers will be on site to support the staff throughout the week. They will not be left unsupervised and will always work under the guidance of the DBS-checked team.
