Event description

Description

Self-harm is a common issue in young people. Lifetime prevalence rates of self-harm in the UK has been estimated at around 18%, but data on hospital admissions for self-harm suggest that it is most common in 15–24-year-olds, and particularly females. As well as a wider public health issue, self-harm in young people is a growing local concern. Public Health England (PHE) data indicated that in Stoke-on-Trent, rates of hospital admissions of self-harm for 15-24 year olds are now significantly higher than the national average (in 2016/17) and those of the nearest ‘statistical neighbours’.

The Centre for Health and Development (CHAD) is hosting this seminar that will involve presentations from academics and the local authorities, which will consider the reasons for self-harm in young people, what might be behind the apparent local increase and the role of primary care. We hope to generate discussion and identify priorities for practice and research to better understand the reasons and what can be done to address this issue. This session should be of interest to professionals, academics and members of the public. All are very welcome.

Structure:

  • 12:30 – Welcome and introductions
  • 12:35 - Young people and self-harm – the local context, Paula Willman, Stoke-on-Trent City Council and Vicky Rowley, Staffordshire County Council
  • 12:50 - Understanding the rise in local hospital admissions for self-harm in young people, Fiona McCormack and Sian Parry, CHAD
  • 13:10 - Identifying and managing self-harm in primary care: an opportunity NOT to be missed, Dr Faraz Mughal, GP and NIHR In-Practice Fellow, Keele University
  • 13:30 - Q&A and discussion (priorities for practice and research).
