Your Education Week Postgraduate Conference

We are delighted to be able to offer as part of Loughborough Students' Union Your Education Week a conference open to all of our postgraduate population. Both taught and research communities are invited to this half day event which will include a series of talks and a roundtable open forum. The day will conclude with a question and answer session with several members of the academic leadership team and student represenatives ready to answer your questions or hear your thoughts about your experience here at Loughborough University.
Session 1: Postgraduate Degrees and your Future Career
The day will begin with an opportunity to hear from several distinguised speakers. We will have six speakers during the course of the afternoon who will all share with you not only their own stories of development post postgradute degree but also offer tips and tricks. The speakers for this event are still to be confirmed but the session will offer something to all with views from both traditionaly historic career projections to lecturing jobs and also those who stepped away from the University to pursue other paths.
1230: Welcome (George Hones, Postgraduate Executive Officer)
1235: Postgraduate degrees and the future: an overview of a changing employment landscape (Helen Smith, Head of Careers at Loughborough University)
1300: Dr Deena Ingham (Academic Practice Development Advisor, Centre for Academic Practice, Loughborough University)
1320: Selling your own skills to employers (Will Davies, Careers Consultant at Loughborough University)
1340: Remaining within academia as an outsider post PhD (Sophie Louise Hyde, Entrepreneur, soon to be PhD Graduate and Loughborough University Schools & College Liason Team)
1400: Leaving academia: a difficult decision (Naomi Riley Dudley, published author and Creative Writing MA Graduate).
1420: Advertising your external skills to employers and what skills can we support through the Union (George Hones, Postgraduate Executive Officer)
1450: Closing remarks (Lewis Wood, Education Executive Officer)
Session 2: Round Table Forum
The second aspect of this conference is an open opportunity for both taught and research students to discuss openly about different plans that the Union have to contribute to your overall experience at the University. It is also a chance for you to discuss the co-curricular activities that the Union offers and to pitch new ideas. This will involve discussions with both Union staff and Executive Officers and is a great chance to directly have your voice heard.
Session 3: Question and Answer Panel Event
The final part of this day is an opportunity for you to question the academic leadership team and members of the Union Executive. The panel for this question and answer session will be attented by Proffesor Rachel Thomson (Pro-Vice Chancellor for Teaching), Dr Kathryn North (Head of Researcher Development), Dr Kathryn Walsh (Director of Enterprise Office), George Hones (Postgradute Executive Officer), Lewis Wood (Education Executive Officer) and Laurence Coles (PGR Programme Vice-President). This is an opportunity for you to ask questions about anything relating to your academic interests and the co-curricular activites that the University and the Union offer to you. If you are unable to attend in person we would be happy to facilitate your questions through emails to firstname.lastname@example.org . The event will be live streamed and recorded.
Who is this event for?
This event is only open to students' of Loughborough University. It is open to particularly to the postgraduate community primarily(research and taught). Spaces for the workshop may be opened up to undergraduates closer to the date. Please also do look at the othe events we will be offering during Your Education Week, which you can find here -
