Abstract Painting

Taking Jane Austen book titles as inspiration, create mini abstract panel paintings using acrylic paint. These will be joined together into a giant collective ‘book cover’. Explore how shape, colour and texture can express your ideas and feelings.

Your Stories

Take part in free workshops designed by young creatives for the people of Southampton, and tell your story to the world.

Inspired by Jane Austen’s work, these free workshops use art forms so that you can tell your stories in powerful, creative ways. Your art will be shared digitally and displayed in a collective exhibition in late autumn, leading up to a celebration on Jane Austen’s 250th birthday on 16th December.

If you are a literature lover, a budding creative or just someone with something to say about today’s world – this is your space to be heard.

Free drinks and snacks at every workshop, and everyone is welcome - just sign up in advance.

Please note that activities are suitable for people aged 11+. The workshops have been designed for adults, young people and older children. Anyone under 18 will need to be accompanied by an adult at all times - and that adult is obviously very welcome to join in!

Please also note that you may be photographed during the workshop for evaluation and publicity purposes. You will be asked about permission to use of any photos taken at the point of booking your tickets.

These workshops are Supported by Southampton Forward, National Lottery Heritage Fund and Foyle Foundation as part of Jane Austen 250.

We also wish to thank In Focus Education for their support with this project.

Frequently asked questions

What age are these workshops appropriate for?

Activities are suitable for anyone aged 11+. All activities are suitable to young people and adults alike. We asked that anyone under 18 is accompanied by an adult, who is equally very welcome to join in the activities.

Do I get to keep what I make in the workshop?

We would ask that you leave behind anything you create in the workshop, so that we can include it in a public exhibition later in the year. More details on the free, public exhibition will be emailed to you at a later date.
