About this event

Your Story - a memoir writing course

10am-12pm (BST) Thursdays 9th Sept - 25th Nov 2021

Course fee: £375

This real-time online course is designed to support you as you write your memoir. Whether you're at the initial ideas stage, or you already have a manuscript draft underway, regular workshops on craft, quality critique, weekly deadlines and the support of your fellow writers are here to help keep you on track.

Unlike many other writing courses, WriteClub offers real-time online sessions where you will feel part of a team, working towards a common goal. Your Story - the memoir course is divided into three 12-week parts so you can choose to commit to each part separately.

Week A = Under the Bonnet - workshop on craft

Week B = Feedback on your work with a small committed critique group

2 x 30 min 1-1 mentoring sessions with Alison Powell

This is an online course delivered using Zoom, Google folders and Slack. You will need access to a steady internet connection

Under the bonnet sessions:

  • Staying focused - How to prioritise your writing
  • What story are you writing? - Seven basic plots
  • Psychic distance - How close are you to the action
  • Archtypes - Who's on your team?
  • Meanwhile... - who else is in your story?
  • Experiments with form and making the most of your life story

To apply for a place, please register here and email hellowriteclub@gmail.com with a sample of your work.

FAQ

Is it an actual club? Like, do I get a badge? Not really. Though there is a community of WriteClubbers who regularly come to workshops both online and in real life. WriteClub offers workshops to help you get words down on the page, to help you deal with procrastination and to get feedback on your work.

What if I haven't written anything before? Well, that's probably not true - we've all written stuff at some point. Basically we're here to create a space for you to get words out. It doesn't matter where you are with your writing. Perhaps you're half way through a second novel. Perhaps you haven't written more than a shopping list in years. Wherever you're at, we'll have a session to suit you.

I really want to work one-to-one rather than in a group. Can I do that? Sure. Pop us an email at hellowriteclub@gmail.com and we'll arrange a time to chat about our mentoring packages.

Who leads the sessions? Workshops are mostly led by WriteClubber-in-chief, Alison Powell. She's been running writing workshops forever (seriously, she even used to get her primary school friends writing stories...) and established WriteClub in 2016. She supports new and established writers and runs regular workshops on all aspects of the writing craft. She is an award winning writer, published in various anthologies and magazines and holds an MA in Creative Writing from Bath Spa.

She has years of experience as a secondary English & Drama teacher and is also a fully fledged INLPTA certified Master Practitioner of NLP and coaching. She is an active member of NAWE and a channel partner with Paper Nations.

She believes that everyone has the right to express themselves in writing and runs all her sessions with a positive approach and a genuine passion for helping people set their words free. Her love of poetry and story, along with her enthusiasm for helping people find the best in themselves are reflected in her lively, welcoming and open presentation style. She promises to do her very best to ensure you find the support you need to make your writing feel wonderful.
