Event description

Description

Anne Beamish will be joining us at the August meeting. She is the founder of Independent Cambridge.

Anne has had a long career in publishing and it’s her passion for storytelling, collaboration and exploration that led her to her current position, working alongside her partner Steve Linford, to create Independent Cambridge.

Storytelling with passion

Anne has always been interested in stories…people’s stories, recollections and reflections on activities and events. Like many people, Anne is passionate about the independent scene – both on the high street and off – the smaller, independent retailers and other businesses that make Cambridge unique and who’s commercial and cultural contribution is more important than a lot of people realise.

It was this enthusiasm that led Anne to starting Independent Cambridge, initially as a printed guide. Speaking with the people in her favourite haunts, she felt sure that there was real strength in numbers. So, she began her quest, to create a genuine collaboration that would enable every small business in Cambridge to have a voice, be seen and actually be found by both locals and tourists. Something for everyone who lives in or visits the city, something that would inspire and inform people in their quest to take a slightly different track, discovering the real Cambridge community and escaping the big chains.

Learning

There’s always something to learn, and Anne’s business is no exception. Her experience stepping away from the comfort of employment to forge her own future was bold and brave and it has paid off some unexpected ways. First and foremost, Anne gets to pursue her passion, speaking with, discovering and sharing the vast array of small retailers around the city. She talks with over 500 businesses…discovering what makes them tick, why they’re different, where they are and what’s special about them. As custodian of the guide, Anne is a figure head of all things indie in Cambridge, her knowledge is vast and her narrative honest and homely.

Community

This is Anne’s overriding passion, her sense of community, sharing and helping others around her has enabled Anne to build a successful business. It’s precisely these values that everyone at Drive holds dear, creating a trusted and knowledgable community where problems are shared and solutions offered.

During the meeting Anne will share hints and tips to establish your voice, ensuring that you communicate in a trusted and authentic way. She will also share the many ways in which collaboration can enhance and grow your business, with a focussed session on the power of face to face interactions...that's a passion we all share at Drive - meet, learn and grow.

This meeting will take place at the Allia Future Business Centre, Kings Hedges, Cambridge on Friday 4th August from 8.30-11.00am.
