Event description
Play by ear and develop your creativity, explore folk music, and learn from inspiring professional musicians.

About this Event

Play by ear and develop your creativity, explore folk music, and learn from inspiring professional musicians. Take part in a day of creative folk music workshops with other young musicians and, if you want to, audition for the National Youth Folk Ensemble.

The Youth Folk Sampler Days will happen online in May half-term 2021.

To register for a Youth Folk Sampler Day you will need to:

  • be aged 12-18
  • live in England
  • be able to play confidently on your chosen instrument

Youth Folk Sampler Days are free to attend and open to players of any instrument. Playing and learning will be done by ear.

Each Sampler Day features:

  • engaging workshops on Zoom introducing young musicians to folk tunes, techniques and creative ideas
  • information session with Ensemble staff
  • optional short audition, if you wish to apply for the National Youth Folk Ensemble (applicants need to be aged 14-18 on 1 September 2021).

Please register for your preferred Sampler Day date. Each date is associated with a region – but wherever you live in England, you can register for any of the eight dates.

If you’ll be aged 14-18 on 1 September 2021 and you're interested in joining the National Youth Folk Ensemble, you’ll need to attend a Sampler Day to start the audition process. Visit www.efdss.org/learning/young-people/national-youth-folk-ensemble/join to find out more about auditioning.

The National Youth Folk Ensemble is an English Folk Dance and Song Society programme, funded by Arts Council England.

Youth Folk Sampler Day partner organisations: Lancashire County Council Heritage Learning Team + Lancashire Music Hub.
