Youth Homelessness Hack: visualising data to understand youth homelessness
Event Information
Description
Who are we? We're Centrepoint's Youth Homelessness Databank. We believe that no young person should be homeless in the UK, and we design user-focused, data-driven and digitally-enabled approaches to ending youth homelessness.
Who is this event for? We are calling on data visualisation and tableau specialists to help us update our current Youth Homelessness Databank website by helping us design and embed Tableau visualisations of youth homelessness data.
Why? We are doing this because decisions about youth homelessness are made in the dark. No-one actually knows how many young people are homeless and what works. Formal homelessness statistics merely reflect the number of young people who have been accepted as homeless and housed by their local authorities. They do not reflect rough sleepers or the hidden homeless: people sofa-surfing, people sleeping in insecure locations or those resorting to desperate measures to ensure they have a roof over their head. Check out our report for more!
We are working across the youth homelessness sector to collect as much data as possible and turn it into knowledge – come help us do this better!
What will happen on the day?
Full details are TBC, but expect:
1. Guidance and insight from expert Tableau users
2. Inspiration from people using data and #techforgood
3. A fuzzy, feel good feeling as charities explain what their challenges are with youth homelessness data and how you get to help out
4. A chance to get stuck in- most of the day will be spent creating templates and visualisations in order to derive meaning from youth homelessness data - here's the data from last year's data collection, as a taster and here is one data journalists' take on it!
5. A meaningful output- the best of what we create on the day will be used to make our real-life data dashboard better!
