Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised course designed specifically for those people that teach, work, live with or care for young people aged 8 – 18 years. This two day, educational course teaches people how to identify, understand and help a young person who may be developing a mental health problem. In the same way as we learn physical first aid, mental health first aid teaches you how to recognise those crucial warning signs of mental ill health.
The cost of the course is £150 plus VAT = £180 TOTAL
* 20% discount available to community voluntary sector organisations, using discount code: CVSDiscount
If you are a parent or carer supporting a young person you may also be entitled to a discount. Please contact us for more details either by email: firstname.lastname@example.org or by telephone: 01404 549045. Please note, this offer is limited to a maximum of 6 people and is available on a first come first served basis.
Course cost includes: 2 days training, course manual, certificate, buffet lunch and light refreshments
Course times each day are 9am start to 4.30pm ends. There is ample free parking on site.
The course will be delivered by Christine Carol – Fully qualified Youth MHFA Instructor with MHFA England.
Sessions will be a mix of presentation, group discussions and group work activities. Our instructors provide a very safe learning environment and are trained to support you throughout the whole course. Due to some of the sensitive subjects of our courses, including suicide, we limit numbers to 16 people, and attendees must be over 16 years of age.
You’ll receive a comprehensive Youth MHFA manual that you can take away with you at the end of the course and also an attendance certificate from MHFA England to say you are now Youth Mental Health First Aider.
Youth MHFA teaches practical skills that be can used every day. It gives a deeper understanding of the complex issues relating to young people and mental health, and helps people recognise the symptoms of mental health problems and enables them to provide initial help.
Youth MHFA is split up into 4 manageable chunks – What is mental health?, Depression and Anxiety, Suicide and Psychosis, Self Harm and Eating Disorders. You will also cover other topics specific to young people that include child and adolescent development, bullying/cyber bullying, substance misuse and promoting protective factors and good parenting.
In each section you’ll learn how to:
- Spot the early signs of a mental health problem in young people
- Feel confident helping a young person experiencing a problem
- Provide help on a first aid basis
- Help protect a young person who might be at risk of harm
- Help prevent a mental health illness from getting worse
- Help a young person recover faster
- Guide a young person towards the right support
- Reduce the stigma of mental health problems
