Event Details

As a globally recognised 2-day training course, Youth MHFA is designed to teach staff, volunteers and parents alike how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health. The training gives people the skills and confidence to safely address mental health issues in young people aged 8 to 18, with a strong practical focus on how to support a young person experiencing mental distress. All courses are delivered by an experienced associate instructor who has attended the seven day instructor training programme accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health. Our quality assured associates have been recruited due to their diverse backgrounds in education and youth work, experience in mental health, and ability to engage and motivate participants.

Who it's for

International school staff working in an English curriculum context who teaches or cares for 8 to 18-year-olds. This programme is delivered by MHFA Nederland but will be delivered in English and with an English contextual bias.  If you would like the programme in Dutch, please contact https://www.mhfa.nl/.

Capacity

We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn. Learning takes place across four manageable sessions. Through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions, each session is built around a Youth Mental Health First Aid action plan.

Everyone who completes the course gets:

  • A Youth MHFA manual to refer to whenever they need it (the manual recommends some English organisations that offer support; we will provide additional materials for the Dutch system)
  • A certificate to say they are a Youth Mental Health First Aider

Programme Facilitator

MHFA Nederland. MHFA training courses were first developed in Australia in 2000. In the years since, it has evolved into a global movement with licensed programmes in 24 countries and counting. Over two million people have been trained in MHFA skills worldwide. You can find out more about international MHFA programmes at mhfainternational.org

MHFA came to England in 2007 and was launched under the Department of Health: National Institute of Mental Health in England (NIMHE) as part of a national approach to improving public mental health. We're on a mission to train one in ten of the population in England in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) skills – because we all have mental health. Mental health education empowers people to care for themselves and others. By reducing stigma through understanding, we hope to break down barriers to the support that people may need to stay well, recover, or manage their symptoms – to thrive in learning, work and life.
