Mental Health in Schools

About half of all mental illnesses begin by the age of 14, and have significant consequences throughout the life course. There has been a recent drive to promote better mental health awareness in schools, design better studies in school-age children, and even develop interventions to deliver in a school setting. Noble intentions – but challenging to say the least. We ask our panel: what should be the priorities for mental health in schools?

Join the public discussion

In the forthcoming ‘Mental Health Question Time’ event, we bring together a diverse panel of knowledgeable experts to discuss how the specific mental health needs of children and adolescents can be addressed in the school setting.

  • What should be the priorities for mental health in schools?

  • What works to prevent and treat mental illness in the school setting?

  • Should schoolteachers and GPs be the frontline point of contact for mental health services? If so, what training is needed for these people to be comfortable performing this role?

  • How should parents, caregivers, health professionals, schools and other agencies best work together to support young people?

  • What do young people want?
