Join Dorset Youth (DY) and Dorset Council at Lytchett Minster school for our joint Youth Worker Training Day!

Tony Nye (Dorset Council) and Lilly Markwell (Dorset Youth) have taken on board feedback from youth workers and devised a 'one stop shop' of a range of training opportunities for you and your staff and volunteer team.

This event is FREE to attend, funded by Dorset Council & Dorset Youth.

The timetable for the day is as follows -

9:00 am - Doors open

9:30 - 11:00 - Workshop session 1

11:00 - 11:15 - BREAK

11:15 - 12:45 - Workshop session 2

12:45 - 13:15 - LUNCH

13:15 - 14:45 - Workshop session 3

14:45 - 15:00 - BREAK

15:00 - 16:30 - Workshop session 4

Lunch is not provided so attendees are required to bring their own.

The following training is available to book:


E mergency first aid at work (6 hour workshop)

T his training looks at possible medical emergencies and how to deal with them, recognising types of medical emergencies, how to summon help and overall, this course offers insight to situations that could be life-dependent.


Mental health first aid (8 hour workshop including breaks and lunch) PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS WORKSHOP WILL RUN FROM 9AM TO 5PM

The course is endorsed by mental health first aid England and the training is facilitated locally by the MHFA trainer. Outcomes of the course include recognising the symptoms of mental health problems, being able to provide initial help, guide a young person towards appropriate professional help, to be mindful of your own wellbeing and developing and understanding of how you can create and maintain a healthier and more productive environment to promote the wellbeing of young people.


C ontextual safeguarding (3 hour workshop):

T his workshop gives an introduction to Contextual Safeguarding, theories associated with it and tools you can use as a youth worker.


Supporting with neurodiverse young people (1.5 hour workshop at 11:15-12:45 and 13:15-14:45)

This workshop will look at several key topics that young people are passionate about which includes 'understanding neurodiversity.' Delegates will explore sensory processes, changes in routine, social skills, understanding and processing information, organising and planning and communication and language.


Introduction to supporting LGBT + young people (3 hour workshop):

A course run by SPACE Youth Project, introducing how best to support LGBT+ young people within your sessions/organisation


Introduction to detached and outreach youth work (1.5 hour workshop)

This workshop explores the key principles of detached and outreach youth work, clarifies the distinctions between the two and how they can fit into your youth work delivery


Delivering detached youth work (1.5 hour workshop) PLEASE NOTE – Anyone choosing this workshop must also choose the Introduction to detached youth work workshop

Exploring the practices and policies of detached youth work that enables high quality engagement whilst keeping young people and staff safe. In this session we will also be looking at how detached youth work fits into a contextual safeguarding framework


Understanding The Pineapple Project (1.5 hour workshop)

In this workshop we will share how young women inspired us to develop a Dorset Council county wide initiative that works with non-traditional partners to safeguard young women outside of their home
