Event description

Description

Do risk assessments make you break out in a cold sweat? Always wanted to do a site-specific performance, but felt overwhelmed by the potential hazards involved? Never fear – Andrew Evans, Health and Safety Advisor to many of Scotland’s national performing companies, is here to help!

In this introductory session, you will explore how to keep your rehearsal rooms and performances safe for participants, audience members and leaders through careful risk management, planning and real-life case studies.

By the end of this course, participants will:

  • understand the applicable H&S Regulations;
  • be familiar with the key hazards and risks to take account of;
  • have knowledge of risk assessment principles and what the requirements are;
  • know what documentation to complete and when;
  • be familiar with key H&S roles and appointments
  • be able to reduce the risks associated with your events and activities.
  • know what arrangements to have in place to help protect everyone from harm.

Participants are asked to come along with examples of H&S issues they have experienced (i.e. previous H&S experience, near misses/accidents etc). If they don't have any specific experience, they are asked to consider the top three hazards or H&S concerns for the activities in which they are involved or run.

About the facilitator

Andrew holds a MSc in Safety, Health and Environmental Management and has more than 25 years’ experience in the field. He is a chartered member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH). For the last three years, Andrew has chosen to specialise in the arts and entertainment sector. He has worked as the Health and Safety Advisor for the Federation of Scottish Theatre and also held the position of Head of Health, Safety & Wellbeing at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Following these roles he decided to become self-employed and in this capacity he now supports all of Scotland's National Performing Companies on health and safety matters. He is a registered consultant on the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (OSCHR).

With a unique partnership approach, Andrew works with theatre, arts and entertainment companies to help address specific HSE risks within the sector. He is Scotland's representative at the Health and Safety Executive's Joint Advisory Committee for Entertainment (JACE) forum, and works across the sector to apply best practice initiatives and to develop common standards to help deal with sector specific challenges.
