Description

The Bristol Young Urbanists are pleased to invite you to join us for our mock awards assessment visit to the Gaol Ferry Steps, Whapping Wharf, Bristol - one of this year’s finalists for The Academy of Urbanism Great Places award. The event will be held on the evening of Wednesday 4 October 2017.

The Gaol Ferry steps form part of the completed first phase of redevelopment of the Whapping Wharf site at Bristol’s Harbourside. Since its completion, the Gaol Ferry steps and associated Number 1 and Number 2 Cargo have seen soaring popularity as a social and retail destination, supporting independent traders, bars and restaurants. Our visit seeks to provide an insight into what makes the area a successful urban space and how urban development is assessed through the Academy's Urbanism Awards process.

The event will be hosted by representatives from the site developer, Umberslade and architects, AlecFrench, who will provide an overview of the development and the approach to creating the Gaol Ferry steps as a destination for Bristol, as well as ongoing plans for completion of the development. The evening will be supported by input from Bristol’s local Academy of Urbanism Academicians, who will be able to provide valuable insight into The Academy of Urbanism awards assessment process and what we can learn from it. Our proposed programme for the evening is as follows:

18.00 Welcome and introduction to the Academy awards assessment process and the evening ahead, led by representatives of the Academy

18.30 Guided tour of the Whapping Wharf site and Gaol Ferry steps, hosted by Umberslade and Alecfrench

19.00 Presentation and Q&A session with the developer and architect

19.30 Breakout sessions to consider and discuss the AoU awards assessment criteria in relation to the site – how would the Young Urbanists score the Gaol Ferry steps for a Great Places award?

20.00 onwards, we plan to continue with drinks and networking at Wild Beer on the Gaol Ferry Steps

Numbers for this exciting event are strictly limited, so please secure your place using the link below. Attendance is FREE for Young Urbanist members and Academicians, £5 for non-members.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to get in touch. Please also share the event with colleagues or other contacts who may be interested in Bristol Young Urbanists events.
