What is Zentangle Art?
Zentangle Art is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured repetitive patterns. Almost anyone can use it to create beautiful images. It increases focus and creativity, provides artistic satisfaction along with an increased sense of personal well being.
In 2005, calligrapher Maria Thomas described to her partner, the sense of focus, well-being and relaxation she felt whilst creating background patterns on a manuscript. Her partner, a former Buddhist monk, recognised this state as one of meditation. Together they worked towards creating a system that would teach and encourage others to experience the same sensations.
People often ask what the difference is between doodling and drawing Zentangles. Generally the purpose of ordinary doodling is to mindlessly pass the time, creating images that appear random and disconnected. On the other hand, a Zentangles intertwining patterns have purpose, together with a definite flow and rhythm. Some Zentangle patterns are so beautiful and interesting they almost become works of art
Zentangle is a pattern-based, abstract drawing technique. It is sometimes done on square pieces of special paper called “tiles” . All that is needed is paper, pens and pencils. "Official" Zentangle drawing uses certain pre-determined patterns. As you learn to Zentangle, you learn how to draw the individual patterns and combine them with other patterns.
What you will learn
I will be introducing you to the concept of Zentangling, with some illustrations and then teaching a number of basic patterns, showing you how to mix them up (tangelations) and giving you tips and strategies to enhance and personalise your own patterns. Each Tangle will create a new piece of art every time.
Absolutely no previous experience is necessary and I promise, everyone can do it regardless of how much or how little “artistic ability” you may believe you have.
