About Zest Singles

Zest Singles is members' club for singles over 45 in Devon, curating a wide range of events designed to bring like-minded singles together. Visit our website for more information.

Event Overview

At this event a Zest host will be there to meet you, along with our expert guide, Pete Sherman.

Pete Sherman, an experienced walker and member of the local rescue team will be our guide for the day and all of our Dartmoor Walks. Throughout the year we will be putting on a variety of longer walks on Dartmoor, getting longer as the weather gets (hopefully) warmer and the daylight gets longer.

Due to the unpredictable weather on Dartmoor and the danger of low-lying fog, please always check your emails and text messages on the day of the walk, as we may have to cancel on the day of the walk.

Walk Details

A gentle stroll around the back of Haytor to experience the amazing Emsworthy Bluebells.

The route is about 5.6km (3.5 miles) - around 2 - 2.5 hours and pretty much flat. But please, still wear walking BOOTS. The ground can get very uneven in places, and a twisted ankle will really spoil your day.

Please check the weather forecast before setting out and wear appropriate clothing. But always bring waterproof!

Meet at the car park at 1.15 pm for a 1.30 pm walk start

We'll meet outside the Visitor's Centre at Haytor Lower Car Park

From DNPA: Please be aware that birds could be nesting anywhere on the open moorland and you must not disturb them from 1 March to 31 July. ALL DOGS MUST BE KEPT ON LEADS.

The route

(Description provided by Pete, along with his humour!)

Our route will take us along the granite tramway to the old medieval farm of Emsworthy, which has fantastic fields of bluebells that come out a few weeks after all the other ones in the county! Bring your camera to get some iconic photos.

If the wind direction is right, we'll be able to smell the bluebells as we walk towards them, while hearing Cuckoos laying claim to their territory.

Of course, we are dealing with old Mother Nature here, and she pays scant regard for the plans of us mere mortals! I have based the date for this walk on what usually happens. Any gardeners amongst you will know that flowering times depend on a lot of things, not least is the weather.

All we can do is plan, and hope! No guarantees!

Useful Information

Meet at 1.15 pm

We will leave at 1.30 pm

It's a popular place, so please allow plenty of time to find a place to park!

Parking/Meet Up location

Visitor's Centre at Haytor Lower Car Park

OS Grid Ref SX76527715,

The Lower car park is CARD ONLY pay and display, £2 for all day.

This car park is very popular and gets full very quickly, but there is a larger, free car park halfway towards the top car park, which should be open by now.

What to bring/wear

We are on Dartmoor, with its unpredictable weather and rough ground.

It's best to bring a waterproof jacket and trousers and several light warm layers that you can mix & match, rather than one 'all or nothing' duvet jacket.

Quite often the walks on Dartmoor will be just a 'beaten way', so please wear walking BOOTS for ankle support, not just walking shoes.

Please Note

  • The ticket price includes a picnic style afternoon tea, with food and drink.
  • To ensure we can contact you with any last-minute event details or changes, we will ask for your mobile number during the checkout process.
  • Zest Singles does not accept liabilities for accidents/incidents.
  • Events may be cancelled due to weather or unforeseen circumstances with full refunds issued with a minimum of 24 hours' notice.
