About this event
Zine Club at Artists at the Meadows!
Join us from 10am-12pm to make and swap zines with local illustrator Hayley Wells. Hayley will show you how to make an 8-page mini-zine, and all materials will be provided. If you would like to bring along collage materials or existing projects then please do so! Space is limited so please arrive early to avoid disappointment.
This month we will be preparing for the Hive Zine Fair, which will be taking place on Saturday 4th October, 10am-5pm, at Shire Hall Chelmsford. Hayley will be on hand to answer any questions about the zine fair, including what to expect and how to sell your zines at our communal table. More information about the event can be found on Instagram.
Artists at the Meadows is wheelchair accessible. Please let us know if you have any accessibility needs and we will do our best to accommodate them. In the interest of keeping our community safe, please do not attend if you show symptoms of Covid-19.
About Artists at the Meadows
Based in the Meadows Shopping Centre, Chelmsford, Artists at the Meadows is a gallery space run by a collective of local artists. The space includes a monthly rotating exhibition and offers customers the opportunity to watch the artists at work. Artists at the Meadows won Best New Business at the Chelmsford Business Awards 2024, and Exceptional Customer Service in 2025. We are located at Unit 32 (next to the CBD shop and across from One Beyond) – not to be confused with The Art Place!
About Hayley Wells
Hayley Wells (they/them) is an Essex-based illustrator with an MA in Children’s Book Illustration from Cambridge School of Art. Hayley made a mini-zine every week in 2024 and uses zines to explore new ideas in their creative practice.
When they’re not illustrating, Hayley can be found growing vegetables at their allotment or falling over on roller skates.

Frequently asked questions
We welcome all ages! Generally the zine club is attended by adults, but we welcome young people and children over 7, too (a responsible adult must be present). Hayley is DBS-checked.
A zine is a self-published booklet, usually made with simple materials and printed using a photocopier. Zines can include any content, but often include poetry, journal-writing, collage, drawings and comics.
Absolutely! The best thing about zines is that anyone can make them, no experience is necessary. You can bring an idea with you or use the materials provided to spark inspiration. Usually chatting to others or looking at examples of zines sparks something, too!
Artists at the Meadows is on the ground floor and there are accessible public toilets nearby. Sometimes the shopping centre can be loud, so please feel free to bring and wear noise cancelling headphones. If you have any additional access needs, please message Hayley to discuss.
