We're back with a film we've always wanted to show you, Jane Campion's criminally under-screened erotic thriller In The Cut (2003).

About this event

After a year and a half in lockdown, we're back with a suitably horny film we've always wanted to show you. Join us on Tuesday the 7th September at 18:30 to watch Jane Campion's criminally under-screened erotic thriller In the Cut (2003).

We love In The Cut for its soft vision of worlds that belong to women, the inscrutable strength and intellect of its main character... and that scene where Mark Ruffalo goes down on Meg Ryan.

When a body is discovered in her back garden, English teacher Frannie (Meg Ryan) meets Detective Malloy (Mark Ruffalo) and is drawn from her introverted world of language, observation and sisterly bonds to one of sex, danger and emotional ambivalence.

The steamy, softly lit older sister to Campion's blockbuster TV show Top of the Lake, In the Cut was dismissed by critics on its release, but has since been reevaluated as a provocative feminist masterpiece.

'When Campion sold the film to investors, she pitched it as a serial killer mystery in the vein of David Fincher’s Se7en. Today she acknowledges how much of a misrepresentation that was, as the film is not so much about the murder as it is about the thoughts and experiences of being a woman in the modern world and the violence of men, even those who are supposed to protect you, is a part of it. In the Cut might be one of Campion’s most maligned works, but it is also one of her most fascinating – a tense erotic thriller that’s well worth a second look.' - Justine Smith for Little White Lies.
