Zoetrope Workshop
Overview
In this hands-on workshop, participants learned about the principles of early animation by constructing their own working zoetrope from a precision laser-cut kit.
Participants then assembled the zoetrope step-by-step, using laser-cut wooden components that ensured accuracy and ease of construction. They attached the drum, base, and spindle, tested rotation, and explored how frame rate and spacing affect perception of motion. Once assembled, they inserted pre-printed animation strips and experimented with creating their own designs.
By the end of the workshop, everyone left with a fully functional zoetrope and a clear understanding of persistence of vision, frame sequencing, and the mechanical foundations of animation. The workshop blended creative design, basic mechanics, and animation principles in a fun, accessible project suitable for all skill levels.
