This is an advanced lecture series into the various aspects of animal care that are undertaken by the staff at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. The course will include information on the nutrition, veterinary care, specialist husbandry and enrichment that we provide the animals in our care. Sessions will be in the format of classroom based discussions and guest lectures.
The 8 week course will run every Tuesday from Tuesday 27th September 2016 - 22nd November 2016 (excluding the half term break on the 18th October). The class will be held at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo at 14:00-15:30.
By the end of the course, participants will have:
Acquired an understanding of captive animal care that the RZSS is involved in.
The ability to discuss the decisions faced when managing a captive population.
The opportunity to discuss and form opinions upon zoo management practices and the techniques used to support captive conservation breeding programmes.
No prior knowledge is required, though this is aimed at previous participants with a basic understanding of the work of the RZSS. An interest/enthusiasm for animal biology or wildlife conservation would be an advantage. Participants should note that RZSS Edinburgh Zoo is situated on a hill and there will be a certain amount of standing and walking so participants who have any mobility problems should bear this in mind.
Note: You are welcome to stay in the zoo the remainder of the day after your lesson if you wish.
