About this Event

As a 19-year-old trainee architect in Leicester, Ernest Gimson first encountered William Morris in 1884. Thirty years later – when well established as an architect, designer and maker – he worked with May Morris on several projects, including buildings for Kelmscott village and a shared exhibit in the 1916 Arts & Crafts Exhibition at Burlington House. This talk will outline the range of Gimson’s creativity in different media, including furniture, metalwork, plaster and embroidery, and discuss the significance of his long association with the Morrises.

Annette Carruthers taught at the University of St Andrews after working as a museum curator with the Arts & Crafts collections in Leicestershire and Cheltenham. She is a co-author (with Mary Greensted and Barley Roscoe) of Ernest Gimson: Arts & Crafts Designer and Architect, published by Yale University Press in 2019.
