Cohousing is a sustainable neighbourhood design that values privacy and community, independence and interdependence. Where everyone has their own home plus the financial and social benefits of shared assets and "everyone knows your name".

Typically, private homes are clustered around a “common house” with shared amenities which may include a large kitchen and dining room for weekly community meals, a children’s playroom, guest rooms, home office support, an arts and crafts area, exercise facilities, laundry whilst outbuildings might provide a bike shed, greenhouse, workshops and more. Most commonly Cohousing groups are a multi-generational mix of singles, couples, families with children, empty nesters and retired though senior (50+) Cohousing communities are also increasingly popular.

There can be space for private cars on the periphery and pooled cars whilst equipment can be shared. It is claimed that a power drill is only used for 15 minutes of its life on average where every home owns one! Group ownership can reduce the quantity but increase the quality of tools. Many groups also build more eco friendly houses. All ways we can live more lightly on the planet.
