Zymotic Gaze: A Solo Exhibition by Farhad Jafari
10th - 24th September 2016
Opening Night: 9th September, 6pm-8pm
This September, Surface Gallery welcomes Iranian artist Farhad Jafari, and his solo exhibition Zymotic Gaze.
Zymotic Gaze is a collection of drawings and paintings that embody a vibrant conversation between East and West. Embracing the aesthetic traditions of his native Iran, Jafari is also strongly influenced by the western traditions of impressionism and, especially, surrealism. The work is highly-detailed and figurative, but abstracted to produce strangely disfigured representations. The often distorted imagery and swirling configurations in his colour-saturated and culturally hybrid paintings, point to the underlying philosophy of Jafari, an artist of “inter contemplation”.
“My art is part of all things in all minds, a reconfiguration of disparate thoughts for new ways of seeing; we have different angles of perception, but we are fundamentally the same. My art is a mirror that is open to individual interpretation, but also asks the viewer to look a little more closely: we are not bigger than us”.
Zymotic Gaze opens in the Main Gallery in conjunction with Deep Sea, a solo exhibition by Céline Siani Djiakoua, recipient of the Surface Gallery prize for the Nottingham Castle Open 2015, in the Project Space. As always there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Springhead.
