Jonathan Butters
International award-winning product innovation and design mentor and consultant. Studied Mechanical Engineering and Bio-Engineering then Industrial Design at Imperial College and Royal College of Art. Independent consultant for over 27 years working with global brands, Small to Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) and individuals. Cited on or contributed significantly to 23 patents. User-focused innovation tools as well as 3D CAD design. Also, an entrepreneur, having raised £1.5m in the past 8 years for the development of a medical device and have successfully helped clients raise grant funding.
Comfortable working closely with scientists and technology specialists to develop novel solutions to challenging problems. Experienced working with academics, and in the commercial and charity settings.
Jonathan has created designs and managed production in the UK, Europe and the Far East for novel and disruptive technologies in the medical, rehabilitation, scientific, homewares, beauty, wellbeing, marine safety, lighting, sports and transport sectors. Clients have included: Unipath, Glen Dimplex, RNLI, Sunrise Medical, Algeo, Institute of Ageing and Health (NICA), Cargill, Cormed and many UK universities and their spin-outs. He has also led innovation projects including a major multi-agency initiative to develop smart transportation and intelligent ticketing in Greater Manchester.
He has been a Design Council Design Associate and the majority of work for the Design Council has been with UK universities, including: Glasgow, Staffordshire, Lincoln, Aberystwyth, Aston, Cardiff and Newcastle upon Tyne as well as a number of spin-out businesses from Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Jonathan has delivered the Innovate UK Innovate2Suceed programme through RTC North, been a manufacturing digitalisation specialist for the Manchester Growth Company, has been a project selector for Design Network North and published numerous academic articles in journals and design publications.
Jonathan is also a professional drummer and plays with several jazz bands in the NW of England.
