Major General Angus Fay - Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Logistic Operations)
Angus Fay was commissioned into the Royal Corps of Transport in 1983 and served the majority of his early Regimental Duty in Hong Kong with the Brigade of Gurkhas in various regimental appointments. He completed two Combat Arms attachments (1 RRF & 1 RTR), and held appointments as a Platoon Commander at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and subsequently an initial staff appointment as Assistant Military Assistant to the Quartermaster General. Over the period, he deployed on operations to Northern Ireland and Bosnia (IFOR).
Following attendance on the Canadian Forces Command and Staff Course in Toronto, he returned to UK to take command of 28 Squadron, The Queen’s Own Gurkha Transport Regiment in 1997, deploying the unit to Bosnia (SFOR).
Staff appointments have included: SO2 J4 Plans in the Permanent Joint Headquarters (UK), with responsibility for support to operations in Bosnia, Kosovo, FYROM, E. Timor and Sierra Leone; and, SO2 RLC Officers in the Army Personnel Centre. On promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, he was posted to the United States Army Command and General Staff College as the British Exchange Instructor, gaining a Service Masters Degree (MMAS) while there. Subsequently, he took command of 10 Transport Regiment, The Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment, 2004-06 and, following selection for promotion to Colonel in 2005, he was posted back to the Permanent Joint Headquarters (UK) as Deputy Assistant Chief Of Staff J4, dealing predominantly with operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Promoted to Brigadier in December 2007, he attended the Higher Command and Staff Course and subsequently took command of 101 Logistic Brigade in April 2008, deploying the Brigade to Afghanistan in the Joint Force Support role in 2009-10. Thereafter, he was appointed Head of Defence Operational Capability in the MOD, 2011-12, predominantly responsible for providing Defence Ministers and Service Chiefs of Staff with independent and impartial assessment of capability risk and assurance associated with operations. He assumed the post as Head of Defence Support Chain Operations and Movements in January 2013, focussing mainly on redeployment from Afghanistan. Selected for promotion to Major General in May 2014, he assumed the post of Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff for Logistic Operations in November 2014.
Major General Fay is a Colonel Commandant of the Royal Logistic Corps and is Colonel of The Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment. He is also a Trustee of the Gurkha Welfare Trust, President of Army Basketball and Admiral of the Royal Logistic Corps Sailing Association. He is married to Carol with whom he has 3 children.
