Babette van Gerwen

Babette van Gerwen is a self-taught artist working in paint and sculpture, focusing on the healing power of art. Driven by a concern for the current state of the world, Babette believes that art is one of the most powerful healing tools that can help us build a better society. Her creative practice has been shaped through the unlearning of societal constraints like the disconnect to our bodies and the overemphasis on thought and rationality. The process is instinctive, with an emphasis on a strong connection to the senses, allowing colour, texture and gesture to be the primary guides through the creative process. A completed piece of work grabs onto an intangible feeling or experience from a deeply introspective state and communicates something which is both intensely intimate and universal.

Empowering creativity in others as a means to help them reconnect to their sensibility and spontaneity is also an important part of her practice, regularly hosting workshops and participative art pieces to facilitate this.
