Birkbeck Garden History Group

BIRKBECK GARDEN HISTORY GROUP (BGHG) is an organisation for former or current students of garden or landscape history at Birkbeck College, University of London or an institution of similar academic status to Birkbeck, or who have participated in the annual Birkbeck College/BGHG Garden History Study Day.

BGHG has around 200 members who enjoy exploring varied aspects of gardens, landscapes and architectural features (both historic and modern). Visits are arranged from April to October each year

to gardens of particular interest, many not normally open to the public, only accessible to groups, or that are difficult to access by public transport. Visits frequently include a guided tour by the owner or head gardener. Where practicable we use public transport – otherwise our hired coach normally leaves at 8.30am from an easily accessible central London location.

Summer visits are complemented by the BGHG Annual Lecture, held in November each year, and AGM in February and an annual Study Day, usually held in March. The reputation of BGHG is such that it can and does attract high profile speakers of national or even international repute at its Study Day. A members’ newsletter is issued three times a year.
