Birth Up
Hello! My name is Jenny and I am the founder of Birth Up. I live just outside Bath, Somerset with my husband Bill and our two children.
My Hypnobirthing journey began when I was pregnant with my first baby. I actually felt quite excited (if clueless) about giving birth... But still, there was tonnes of stuff I knew I should probably learn about. How is a baby born anyway? Shouldn’t we be taught that at school?! Bill was less enthusiastic and just assumed it would be awful. I told him I’d booked us onto a Hypnobirthing course, I’d heard amazing things. He raised an eyebrow, but trusted me enough that I hadn’t joined a cult…
Well, it was transformative for us both, in different ways. We soaked in the information, options and guidance we’d been given; we practiced, felt calm, informed and excited. Bill became a Hypnobirthing evangelist (and continues to be). We went on to have a magical, joyful, confident birth with our son.
I felt like we’d be let into some kind of secret of what birth could be. After Luca’s birth I felt like I could do anything - breastfeeding and bonding happened easily and those life-changing newborn months were pretty dreamy.
But I came to realise that my experience wasn’t really a typical one. When half the worlds population are likely to do it, why is a positive birth experience so hard to come by?
It’s not uncommon for people to think of birth as something to endure - or as a harrowing, even traumatic experience before you get to meet your beautiful baby. And for too many this is the sad reality.
‘This is wrong’ I thought! ‘There are things we really need to know!’
My exasperation turned into determination, and to try and help right this wrong I trained with KG Hypnobirthing and got my diploma. In 2019 I had my daughter Freida, she was born at home, in her amniotic sac and arrived slightly before our midwife did. Both my births, whilst being different and presenting their own challenges, have been hugely positive, life-enhancing experiences for me and have changed the very fabric of my being.
I hope to be able to help you look forward to the birth of your baby, and have the powerful, joyful experience you deserve.
I teach from our home in Bath, on Zoom for the time being.
