Cambridge University Geotechnical Society

In August 2015, a group of students created the Cambridge University Geotechnical Society with the support of Dr. Giovanna Biscontinand Professor Malcolm Bolton. Within about two years of activity, the society attracted more than 160 members from industry and academia. The rapid growth in membership shows that the Geotechnical Society is responding to a general demand.

To date, the Cambridge University Geotechnical Society has arranged various site visits and during the academic term holds biweekly public talks encompassing topics such as tunnelling, landslides, deep excavations, earthquakes and offshore geotechnics. The interest was such that we were fortunate to secure as speakers renowned industrial and academic experts including Professor John Burland, Dr Brian Simpson, Professor Lidija Zdravkovic and Dr Suzanne Lacasse. Additionally, future workshops are planned to enhance knowledge development and transfer between industry and academia. Events are held in various Colleges in Cambridge in an effort to share some of the University’s culture.
