Creative Play Days

Creative Play Days is an innovative partnership project led by ACE Voices and Aberdeen International Youth Festival, sponsored by Apache, and supported by a wonderful mentoring community.

Launched at AIYF 2016 as a 3-day event, Creative Play Days is all about encouraging our young people to play through lots of fun and creative pathways, all sessions are FREE to join, and they are open to children aged 8-12 years old. The project is also about believing in and empowering our young people in the concept of leadership development through play, and how people of any age can be inspiring leaders.

After three years of planning, the project started in January 2016 with a mentoring programme involving three youth leaders (Abbie Little, S5 at Harlaw Academy; Calum Murdoch, S5 at Bucksburn Academy; and Kate Duthie, P7 at Quarryhill Primary School) who worked through all the requirements needed to deliver the first Creative Play Days event at Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Summer 2016. Our venues included Gray's School of Art/Sir Ian Wood Building at RGU through our partnership with Natalie Kerr, Cultural Animateur in Residence at RGU, and Airyhall Community Centre.

Working with professional mentors, the young people focussed their sessions on their passions of recycled percussion, recycled art and sports. They each prepared, led and evaluated their own day-long session while supporting their team members with their workshops, creating safe spaces in which the power of play can thrive, inspiring other young people to believe in themselves as leaders and have fun!

This year, the project is expanding to 7 play themes over 8 days led by 8 youth leaders (aged 8-18), and all sessions are still free to join thanks to Apache's generous, ongoing sponsorship. The venues this year include Airyhall Community Centre, Hazlehead Grove Nursery and Northfield Parish Church.

Our leadership and mentoring team is really looking forward to delivering the following workshop themes this summer:

Relaxed Sports Day
Old Skool Games
Construction and Design
Den-building and Outdoor Play
Songwriting
Eco-fashion
And Bongo Family

Please see our separate Eventbrite pages for more information on each play day! You can book places for your child(ren) on as many Creative Play Days as you would like.

Hope you enjoy CPD 2017!
