Dr Claire Hubbard-Hall, Bishop Grosseteste University (Lincoln)

The History team at Bishop Grosseteste University are participating in this year's Being Human Festival 2016 - the UK’s only national festival of the humanities, taking place 17–25 November. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, in partnership with the Arts & Humanities Research Council and the British Academy. For further information please see

This year's festival theme is 'Hope & Fear'. Working with three local arts and cultural partners - Lincoln Film Society, The Collection and The Venue - festival events will explore society's present deep obsession with the need for instant information. Through the use of modern technology such as video cameras, the internet, drones and mobile phones, surveillance has become normalised. Lincoln city residents and visitors will have the chance to explore the purposeful watching of the state, past and present, through an array of events such as a public lecture and film screenings.
