Esra Alhamal is a Saudi artist based in London. For the past three years, she has been learning Islamic art more specifically Persian and Turkish illuminated patterns with various artists. She undertook a series of intensive courses with the Art of Islamic Pattern and the Prince's School of Traditional Arts.

She is learning the traditional methods to produce gold painted patterns. Esra likes experimenting with different styles to find her own creative voice.

The patterns she paints are based on geometric grids and rules. For the illuminations, she uses tea stained and hand treated paper, real gold 22-23 Ct and handmade natural colours or high quality readymade gouache. One simple piece takes a week to be completed; an average of ten to twenty hours of work.
