Europeana and Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports

Europeana (www.europeana.eu) is a single access point to the digitised European cultural and scientific heritage. The online portal was launched by the President of the European Commission in November 2008 and currently provides access to almost 22 million materials from European libraries, museums, archives, galleries and audiovisual collections (incl. ca 2 millions in public domain). 2200 institutions contribute cultural content to Europeana and their number and geographic coverage are steadily growing.

Since 2005, the European Commission (www.ec.europa.euhas funded projects contributing to the wider online accessibility of European cultural heritage through the eContentplus and the ICT Policy Support Programme, thus contributinig to the launch and sustainability of Europeana. Further EU funding for the trans-European deployment of Europeana is foreseen in the framework of the Connecting Europe Facility, one of the Commission's major funding instruments proposed for the upcoming multiannual financial framework (2014-2020).
