Highlands and Islands Enterprise

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is the Government's economic and community development agency for an area covering around half of Scotland; from Shetland to Argyll and from the Outer Hebrides to Moray.  In line with the Government Economic Strategy, its purpose is to generate sustainable economic growth in every part of the region.

The life sciences industry in Scotland turns over £3.1 billion with around 640 companies employing more than 32,500 people. It is recognised by both UK and Scottish Governments as one with high growth potential and the capacity to contribute significantly to the nation’s productivity. Our aspiration is to double the economic contribution made by Scotland’s life sciences industry by 2020 and to meet the needs of a global market, whilst offering significant benefits to the communities of our region, coastlines and islands.
