Ilkley Clean River Group

We are a group of Ilkley residents who are outraged by the amount of raw sewage being discharged into the Wharfe on a regular basis. 

We are being realistic in our plans to get some change. Our goals are:

1. To stop Yorkshire Water pumping solids (sanitary/ condoms and faeces) into the river.

2. To stop discharges outside storm conditions, which according to legislation (UWWD ) is irregular exceptional circumstances of high rainfall, rather than regular when it rains. This is not achieved yet as YW and the Environment Agency say the sewage works are operating within license, although the discharge is happening 40 times a year. 

3. To bring forward the plant upgrade so that it is fully functioning.

We have been successful in being awarded Bathing Status Designation for the river at Ilkley - the first river in the UK to secure bathing status.
