In 2009 we had our first multiple genre music festival that was run by participating venues collaborating and pooling resources with local promoters and music organisations. In many ways it was a pilot but it exceeded our expectations with many venues posting the busiest day, weekend or week since trading, many of the hotels and B&Bs fully booked, and an estimated 3-4000 folks attending the events. That year we had 18 venues, 60 acts and 80 shows. Each year the festival has continued to grown in size and attendance.
In 2013, all previous records were broken with attendance estimated between 25,000 and 30,000 with 150 acts performing nearly 200 shows at 36 locations. Such was the success in 2013 that Lancaster Music Festival won the prestigious Lancashire Tourism Award for Visitor Event of the Year and is a finalist in two categories for the Red Rose Awards (Leisure and Tourism Event and Not-for-Profit Business) and shortlisted for the Visit England Award.
Every year the festival is organised by a committee, made up of venue owners, promoters, professionals and community volunteers. Unusually, this festival is entirely self-supported through the venues and local businesses that thrive here and the public and private organisations that support them. There are no external grants or handouts with the aim of the festival to be entirely self-sufficient.
