Trudy Howson was appointed inaugural LGBT Poet Laureate by Camden LGBT Forum in February 2016; the post is for three years and represents London and the UK.
Trudy has worked extensively as an actress and singer in Theatre, Film, Cabaret, Radio and TV. She started performing her own poetry in 2006 and subsequently wrote a poem for the London Olympics which the BBC filmed and used as a trailer in the run up to the Games. Duties of the LGBT Poet Laureate. To:
Write and perform poetry for all the officially recognised LGBTQ days and events
Compose poetry that explores the lives and experience of our very diverse community
Encourage acceptance and inclusivity for all members of our LGBTQ+ family
Promote understanding of, and respect for, who we are, within mainstream society
Work in partnership: "Poetry to Power Social & Cultural Change" (see website)
Support the organisations, large and small, that support us
Organise poetry events (mainly free) that entertain, stimulate, and help to alleviate the isolation and loneliness that can occur with our community
