London Vocal Project

About the London Vocal Project

Directed by composer, arranger and educator Pete Churchill, the London Vocal Project is composed of students and alumni from the various jazz courses at London's Conservatoires.

From a solid foundation in Gospel and Groove music, the London Vocal Project has developed into an impressively versatile ensemble with a constantly expanding repertoire. Since its inception in 2008 it has become the leading contemporary jazz-vocal ensemble in the UK.

A unique and welcome addition to the Jazz scene, the London Vocal Project has not only a clear identity but the requisite vision and diversity to attract a new vocal repertoire from jazz composers.

The choir work closely with Kenny Wheeler and in 2013, recorded the ‘Mirrors Suite’, with the great Norma Winstone MBE. The album follows a memorable performance of the suite with Kenny and Norma as part of the London Jazz Festival in 2011. The collaboration of Kenny Wheeler and LVP continues, with new repertoire being premiered throughout 2014.

The current project for Pete Churchill and LVP is the realisation of Jon Hendricks vocalese treatment of the Gil Evans, ‘Miles Ahead’ suite. Pete has been working with Jon on this choral arrangement since LVP first worked with Jon Hendricks in 2012. A selection of works from the Miles Ahead project was premiered at Ronnie Scott’s on Sunday 1st June 2014, featuring Anita Wardell on lead vocal, Nikki Iles on piano, Steve Watts on bass and Andres Ticino on percussion.
