ORCHYD (registered charity no: 1072239)

Who are we and what do we do?

ORCHYD is a small Ruislip-based registered charity (No. 1072239) Since 1971, we have provided an annual residential holiday for children with disabilities. Our aim is to provide an unforgettable ten days in August for twenty children from around the UK. Over the past 44 years, the activities of the charity have expanded beyond the ten-day holiday to include additional events – one-day outings and weekend breaks for disabled children, throughout the year. The children are escorted on a variety of activities, ranging from visiting a farm to a trip to the cinema. They enjoy experiences to which they might not otherwise have access, such as spending a night under canvas, using a zip-wire slide, or travelling on a tube train. In order to be eligible to participate in ORCHYD events, children must be UK residents, between eight and twelve year of age, with a registered disability, irrespective of gender, religion and ethnicity. For many, it is the first time they have stayed away from home; it also allows their families valuable respite time.

Run entirely by volunteers, ORCHYD relies on over 100 people, ranging in age from 16 to 90, giving up their time to plan and operate the events – and raise the necessary funds. The ten-day holiday therefore requires an intensive community effort, carefully planned and executed to ensure that the children are secure and cared for 24 hours every day and most importantly, have fun enjoying experiences they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Running costs:

- Running the Annual Holiday – currently this amounts to approximately £80 per day for each of the 20 children who attend, or £16,000 in total.

- Providing day trips and weekend breaks (the costs range from a few hundred pounds depending on the number of children who attend and the activities involved)

- Unfortunately sometimes the children’s needs might be too sever to be accommodated on the ten-day holiday. In such exceptional circumstances ORCHYD has previously provided grants to children to access highly-specialist respite care.
