Plymouth Museums Galleries Archives

Plymouth Museums Galleries Archives is responsible for the City Museum and Art Gallery, the Elizabethan House, the Merchant's House, Smeaton's Tower and the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office. It also has a remit for arts development and public art.

Smeaton's Tower and the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office are currently open as normal and we are running or supporting a number of arts development and public art initiatives across the city. The Elizabethan House and the Merchant's House are currently closed for essential restoration work.

The City Museum and Art Gallery closed in September 2016 for the major redevelopment of The Box, Plymouth. This exciting project will see the Museum, Central Library and St Luke's Church buildings transformed into a new cultural and heritage attraction. The collections of the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, South West Film and Television Archive and South West Image Bank will also become part of the The Box.

The Box is set to open in 2020 as part of Plymouth's Mayflower 400 commemorations. While building and construction work is happening the Museum is out 'On Tour' with exhibitions, events and community projects taking place at a range of locations across Plymouth and beyond.
