Sam Slack - DfE East Midlands RPEC

The Role of Regional Prevent Education Coordinators (RPEC)

The Department for Education (DfE) regional Prevent coordinators support and improve Prevent delivery in each region of England. Our role is to help schools, further education (FE) and higher education (HE) with the implementation of their Prevent Duty responsibilities.

My Background

I am the DfE’s regional Prevent coordinator for the East Midlands and have supported the education sector in relation to Prevent since 2013. I have created tools and resources to support the sector to meet its Prevent duty responsibilities, such as supporting on the development of Prevent duty self-assessment templates for schools and FE providers.

I also deliver popular training sessions covering a range of Prevent related subjects, including education sector specific staff Prevent awareness training, FE Prevent Planning webinars, and freedom of speech forums and training.

I hold voluntary governance positions with national higher education (HE) and further education (FE) providers, have completed terrorism studies with Universities of Leiden, Maryland, Tel Aviv & Derby, and am a qualified Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Prior to my role with the DfE, I enjoyed a successful career in the police as a Senior Detective, firearms officer, and commander.
