Save Butterfly World

Save Butterfly World is a Community group and charity which was formed after Breheny Civil Engineers closed Butterfly World St Albans. They did so without giving anyone other than senior staff prior notice. They then immediately asked St Albans Council if they could develop the green belt site!!! YOU CAN GUESS THE ANSWER!!

Save Butterfly World was launched at a meeting on the 12th January 2016. Since then John Breheny and the company have consistently refused to speak to us despite a personal appeal by Clive Farrell the founder of the project.

An early task was to look at the few Butterfly World figures that were available with a chartered accountant and a successful businessman who were both of the opinion that Butterfly World, with better management could be turned around in six months. Very sadly since it closed, our offers to help maintain the site have been ignored. It has deteriorated as a green belt site and is now being used as an H.G.V. car park and heavy plant store.

Despite our pleas to protect the wonderful Miriam Rothschild Meadow with its 24 species of British Butterflies (including the small blue introduced to this site), this has disappeared and this important habitat has become a real eyesore, a blot on Hertfordshire’s wonderful landscape

Save Butterfly World is still trying to obtain this site but we are realistic enough to realise we may not succeed. Consequently, we are in cooperation with Buglife looking at alternatives. We have developed into a well-supported environmental group playing our part in the rich community life of St Alban and Hertfordshire.

To see the environmental credentials of Breheny Civil Engineers visit

We welcome comment as I am sure John Breheny will!!
