Scottish Graduate School of Social Science

The Scottish Graduate School of Social Science is a unique collaboration between Universities in Scotland to make available outstanding research training to doctoral students in the social sciences. The aim of the Scottish Graduate School (SGSSS) is to improve both the quantity and quality of postgraduate research provision in the social sciences across Scotland.

At the heart of the Graduate School is the Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) in Scotland. The SGSSS-DTC was established in 2011 and is the biggest of 21 Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) accredited DTC's in the United Kingdom. The SGSSS-DTC offers ESRC-accredited training across 24 academic pathways. Pathways are broadly analogous to academic disciplines although some are interdisciplinary. Each pathway involves collaboration across a number of Scottish universities, ensuring that the best expertise gets to the right students. However, the Advanced Training opportunities are open to students at any Scottish University irrespective of how they are funded.
